Surf Spots in Arequipa
Arequipa gathers the southernmost spots of the Peruvian surf circuit, on a desert and little-explored coast in the south of the country. Its most outstanding wave is Punta Bombón, considered by many the best left on the southern coast, with long, high-quality rides, while beach towns such as Mollendo and Mejía offer gentle waves over sand ideal for beginners and for family beach days. The region works best with south swells between April and September, and its cold water makes a wetsuit advisable. With far less surfer pressure than Lima or the north, Arequipa rewards the traveler seeking quality waves, solitude and imposing landscapes where the desert falls directly onto the Pacific. It is a different, authentic stop within the Peruvian coast.
