About Mejía

Mejía is a quiet sandy beach south of Mollendo, in the Arequipa region, known for its gentle waves that make it ideal for those just starting out in surfing. The sand bottom and friendly swell let beginners learn and progress without the risks of rocky reefs, in a relaxed, uncrowded setting. The best season runs from April to September, when south swells are more consistent. Beyond surfing, Mejía is famous for sitting next to the Lagunas de Mejía National Sanctuary, an important migratory bird reserve and one of the most valuable wetlands on the Peruvian coast, which adds a unique natural appeal to the visit. It is a perfect destination to combine relaxed surf sessions, beach and birdwatching, in a little-explored area of the south of the country where the sea and the desert meet.
