A book born among Peruvian waves
What do surfing and life have in common? More than you might think. Falú Padilla Colonio, educator, facilitator and ocean lover, has spent years uncovering the lessons the sea has to offer — and he has captured them in his book "Mentalidad de Surfista" (Surfer Mindset).
With the subtitle "The most important wave is not out there, but within yourself", this book is a journey of self-discovery through real stories of Peruvian surfers and bodyboarders. It's not just a book about surfing: it's a guide to facing life with the same courage you need to face a big wave.
What is the book about?
"Surfer Mindset" brings together real stories of courage and resilience from the Peruvian surfing community, combined with deep reflections on adaptability and connection with nature. The book proposes a powerful idea: life is not controlled, it is surfed.
Across 252 pages, Falú guides us through 10 fundamental principles that emerge from the ocean and are directly applicable to our everyday challenges. Each chapter is built with a blend of compelling narrative, personal experiences and practical learning.

The 10 ocean principles for life
At the heart of the book are these 10 pillars that Falú drew from his experience in the sea:
- Presence: Full attention in the moment, free from distractions — like when you're in the water and it's just you and the wave.
- Resilience: Turning wipeouts into learning and coming back stronger. Every fall is a chance to grow.
- Adaptability: Moving better through uncertainty while keeping your course, like reading shifting currents.
- Courage: Acting even with doubt. Making the decisions you've been putting off, just like paddling into a wave that scares you.
- Gratitude: Seeing what you previously overlooked. Living with a deeper sense of fulfillment.
- Connection with nature: Reconnecting with yourself through the ocean and returning to what's essential.
- Joy: Remembering how to enjoy the journey. Living with more energy every day, not just chasing results.
- Serene discipline: Staying calm and consistent without forcing it, responding better when everything speeds up.
- Continuous learning: Never stopping learning, even from mistakes. Growing without needing to be perfect.
- Community: Surrounding yourself with people who share your values and push you to be better, like a lineup where everyone looks out for each other.
A book with scientific foundations
What sets "Surfer Mindset" apart from other personal development books is its solid theoretical backing. The book's central thesis is that mindset is trainable and is strengthened through deliberate practices that regulate attention, emotion and action in changing contexts.
Falú integrates research from renowned authors such as Kabat-Zinn (mindfulness), Csikszentmihalyi (flow state), Carol Dweck (growth mindset) and Wallace J. Nichols (Blue Mind), among others. For example:
- Presence and self-regulation: Mindfulness improves situational awareness and decision-making under pressure — exactly what you need when a big set is heading your way.
- Flow and optimal challenge: "Flow" emerges when skills and challenge are balanced. In the ocean and in life, it's designed, not waited for.
- Growth mindset: Believing you can learn from a fall turns mistakes into useful feedback.
- Blue Mind: The science behind why contact with water enhances mental clarity and well-being.

The official book launch in Lima

The launch was a reflection of the book's spirit: a community united by a passion for the sea, sharing experiences and celebrating that life's most important lessons often come while riding a board.
